So I run it all on one PC now all together.Now I've installed both unraid and freenas on my F2-221 with 10GB of ram and two 6TB helium HGSTs. I've settled on UnRAID even though I have "server" hardware (Xeon with ECC RAM) because I don't use the system enough to justify having the drives spinning all the time, plus the added cost of having another system running the apps I want (Plex, a couple VMs and such). I've got (6) 8TB drives and (6) 4TB drives. ZFS is clearly a better format than the XFS that UnRAID uses, but UnRAID is more flexible. If you just want pure storage - do you have matched drive sizes (or at least several of each size) AND you are OK with your drives being spun up all the time AND you won't need to upgrade storage space for the forseeable future? If yes to all, go with FreeNAS. FreeNAS has this functionality but I don't think it's as mature or easy/bulletproof as UnRAID. Are you wanting just a NAS (storage only), or a "converged appliance" (NAS plus VMs and Plex docker and the like)? If converged, go with UnRAID.
